FAQ's for Election Day
When are the polls open on election day?
Polls open on election day at 7:00 A.M. and close at 8:00 P.M. You will be allowed to vote after 8:00 P.M. if you are in line before 8:00 P.M.
Is there assistance available at the precincts?
If you need help in voting you can request assistance from one of the poll workers.
Can someone else assist me in voting other than poll workers?
You can have anyone assist you to vote except your union steward or your employer.
Will I need to bring any identification on election day?
Every voter will be asked for Photo Identification. If you do not have ID with you when you vote, you will be required to sign an affidavit of voter not in possession of ID. Using your Michigan Drivers License for identification will speed up the voting process.
Can I register to vote on election day and then vote?
You may register to vote in person on Election Day with the local clerk, in addition to photo ID you will be required to show proof of residency. Proof of residency documents must include the applicant’s name and current address. Same day registrants have the option to vote an AV ballot in the clerk’s office or vote in their precinct on Election Day.
For an August Primary election, will I be able to split my ballot when I vote?
In primary elections you cannot split your vote for partisan races, that is voting for one party and then voting for another party in another race. Doing so will void your vote for all the partisan races.

I will be absent on election day; can I still vote?
Yes, you can vote by absentee ballot by calling your local clerk’s office 810-231-1333 x 117 or come into the Township Clerk’s office, 10001 Silver Lake Rd. Brighton, Mi 48116 to obtain an application form to receive an absentee ballot prior to 4:00 p.m. the Monday preceding the election.
What is an absentee ballot?
An absentee ballot is for people who are registered to vote but are unable to attend the polls on election day.
I registered to vote using the mail-in form, can I vote absentee?
With the passage of proposal 18-3 all registered voters are eligible to receive an absentee ballot.
Who is eligible to receive an absentee ballot?
With the passage of proposal 18-3 all registered voters are eligible to receive an absentee ballot without providing a reason. Your request for an absent voter ballot must be in writing and can be submitted to your township clerk. Requests to have an absent voter ballot mailed to you must be received by your clerk no later than 5 p.m. the Friday before the election.
How can I apply for an absentee ballot?
To obtain an Absent Voter Ballot application form, please call (810) 231- 1333 ext. 117 or you may download the application by clicking here (PDF).
How soon do I need to request an absentee ballot?
You can request an absentee ballot up to 75 days before the election. Requests to have an absent voter ballot mailed to you must be received by your clerk no later than 5 p.m. the Friday before the election. In person requests for an absentee ballot may be made on the Saturday prior to the election; for hours of operation check our website or call (810) 231- 1333 ext. 117. The Monday prior to the election, you may receive a ballot up until 4:00 p.m. by applying in person but you must vote and return the ballot in the clerk’s office.
Is there some way that I can automatically receive an absentee ballot for every election?
The Township of Green Oak maintains a permanent absentee list. Any registered voter may request to be added to the permanent absentee list. Once you are placed on this list, you will receive an absentee ballot application for every election that you will need to complete and sign to receive your absentee ballot.
How can I be put on the permanent absentee list?

I'm in the military service or overseas, how can I vote?
Go to the Federal Voting Assistance Program Web site (www.fvap.gov), download and complete a Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). Check the appropriate box to receive a ballot by e-mail, fax or mail. The FPCA can also be used to register to vote.
Can I come to your office and cast my absentee ballot?
Yes, you can come into the Township Clerk’s office and cast your absentee ballot up until 4:00 p.m. the Monday prior to election day.
What are the hours that I can cast my absentee ballot in your office?
Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Additional Saturday hours for the weekend immediately preceding the election are available; for Saturday hours check our website or call (810) 231- 1333 ext. 117.
Can an absentee ballot be sent to me if I am out of City, State or Country?
Yes, an absentee ballot can be sent out of the City, State or Country. This address needs to be stated on your absentee ballot application.
Can an absentee ballot be sent to a Post Office Box?
We can mail your absentee ballot to your Post Office Box, however, to send it, you must also include your full Green Oak Township address.
Can anyone drop off my absentee ballot?
Only an immediate family member, a person residing in the same household or an assistant of the clerk may deliver your absentee ballot to the clerk's office.
I made a mistake on my absentee ballot, can I receive another absentee ballot?
If you spoil your ballot in any way, you can receive another absentee ballot by first calling our office at (810) 231-1333 x 117. We will void your spoiled absentee ballot and issue you a new one.
When is the last day an absentee ballot can be mailed from your office?
Requests to have an absent voter ballot mailed to you must be received by your clerk no later than 5 p.m. the Friday before the election.
When is the last day and time an absentee ballot can be dropped off?
Absentee ballots can be dropped off in the Township Clerk's Office up until 8:00 p.m. on election day.
When is the last day that I can vote an absentee ballot in your office?
The last day you can cast an absentee ballot in our office is the day before an election by 4:00 P.M.
FAQ'S For Absentee Voting on Election Day
Can you cast an absentee ballot on election day?
Normally you cannot vote an absentee ballot on election day. However, if an emergency has occurred, such as you have been hospitalized on election day, or sickness or death has occurred in your family which will not allow you to go to the polls, you can receive an emergency absentee ballot. You will need to contact our office if this has occurred. Voters who register on election day may vote an absentee ballot in the clerk’s office.
Can I drop off my absentee ballot at my voting precinct?
No, you cannot drop off your absentee ballot at your voting precinct, you must bring your absentee ballot to the Township Clerk’s Office.
Can I vote at my voting precinct after I have voted an absentee ballot?
Yes, to do so, you must take your absentee ballot to your voting precinct. The poll worker will then void your ballot and issue a ballot which you may vote in the precinct.
